Fire Effects Field Tour

Fire Effects Field Tour

Join the Wisconsin Prescribed Fire Council and the Lower Sugar River Watershed Association for a field trip on July 18! We'll tour a private property undergoing a prairie and woodland restoration, and we'll hear from the landowners about their use of prescribed fire in that process. This will be a great opportunity to learn about how to conduct prescribed burns on private lands, and how to work with other landowners to do so sustainably and cost-effectively.

The field tour will occur from 9:00am to 12:00pm on July 18 in Albany, WI, and will be followed by a community potluck. It will occur rain or shine and involves walking on moderately steep terrain. Attendees should plan accordingly and expect to sign a waiver upon arrival.

Trail Walk: Sunny Peace Prairie

Join us for a guided walk at Sunny Peace Prairie on August 19th rom 10:00am-11:00am!

This walk is in collaboration with the ADRC of Rock County! Just north of town, this 75-acre property was saved from becoming a mining site thanks to the vision and generosity of a local family. They began the process of restoring the land and ultimately donated it to the Southern Wisconsin Land Conservancy.

Today, visitors can explore scenic trails and relax on Leopold benches while taking in restored prairies, woodlands, and abundant wildlife including Wisconsin’s third-largest shagbark hickory tree.

At nearly 1,000 feet above sea level, the property’s highest point offers breathtaking panoramic views.

Lunch & Learn: From Golf Course to Wild Refuge

Come hear the full story. LSRWA and SWLC invite the community to a Lunch & Learn presentation on why biodiversity matters globally, what it means locally for flooding and water quality in the Sugar River Watershed, and how a former golf course has become a living model of what restoration can accomplish.

Stay for a guided walk through the prairie and wetland trails. Is this piquing your curiosity? The same day as the Lunch & Learn is our FREE community Bioblitz! You are invited to join us for a day of exploration and learning about the importance of biodiversity to our ecosystems. You can learn more about the bioblitz and register at: www.lsrwa.org/bioblitz.

2026 Bioblitz

Our Field Station Team and Partners are hosting a one-day public Bioblitz on Saturday, June 13, at Three Waters Reserve and habitats in the Norwegian Creek Tributary Basin. This is a FREE community event for people of all ages and backgrounds to attend.

What is a bioblitz?! A bioblitz is a community science event where scientists, naturalists, and community volunteers come together to survey and record as many species as possible. This bioblitz will act as a “snapshot” of the biodiversity within our watershed.

Do I need to have any experience in ecology or a certain field? NO! We invite all community members, regardless of their background. This is an opportunity for you to learn more about what is living in the natural world around us.

Intro to Woodland & Savanna Burning for WI Landowners

  • Lower Sugar River Field Station at Three Waters Reserve (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Classroom topics are presented live in an indoor classroom. Topics include fire ecology, tools, fuels & fire behavior, as well as safety and crew structures. A pen and notebook are encouraged for the Classroom Session, but bring your enthusiasm and excitement to learn & engage. For the Field Session, you will need to be wearing all natural fibers (wool, cotton, linen). Some Nomex PPE will be available to borrow. Please make sure you have a water bottle and snacks that you can bring out in the field with you. In order to execute prescribed burning training, a safe environment is key. Weather conditions such as wind, humidity, precipitation, and other factors are taken into consideration. If any of these factors are not met, the field session will be postponed to a “rain date” listed above.
